A core activity for Skillingtons, our expert conservators include specialist stone conservators and stonemasons who regularly work on the repair, conservation and restoration of stone structures, buildings, monuments and sculpture.
This ranges from small scale, single elements on ordinary houses, to building-wide projects at scale on cathedrals and historic houses. We clean, repair, reinstall, transport, stabilise and consolidate stonework, and expertly match new stone and lime-based mortars to repaired or restored sections.
We preserve as much original material as possible and work with expert stonemasons with decades of experience in piecing-in matched new elements, including complex carved elements carved using traditional techniques.
We can undertake routine maintenance, specialist repair, expert conservation, and can tackle severely fire-damaged properties. You can contact us extending, adapting and restoring listed buildings in a traditional style using appropriate and quality materials and using environmentally-friendly materials and designs. We can also build new in a traditional style, to modern building standards, and undertake original stonemasonry and architectural sculpture.
Skillingtons can be called on for the preservation and protection of ruins, including stabilisation, maintenance, capping and graffiti removal.
All of our conservators use appropriate materials and techniques, including historic mortars and renders.
Skillingtons Director, Dr David Carrington, is an Accredited Conservator-Restorer, and several current colleagues are SPAB Craft Fellows and Senior Conservators with over 20 years’ experience at Skillingtons, including Theo Gayer-Anderson (with us since 2003), Simon Ebbs (with us since 2004) and Emma Teale (with us since 2006).
