Skillington Workshop are highly skilled tile and architectural ceramic conservators, with experience of floor and wall tiles, roof features, terracotta mouldings and more. Our conservators undertake careful cleaning, stabilisation, repair, lifting and re-laying of historic tiles in situ and in the workshop. We are always aiming to preserve while ensuring the long-term stability of the installation.
Where tiles are missing or beyond repair, we can source or commission traditionally made replacements that closely match the original in material, colour and design, including complex and decorative historic patterns. Our work includes projects such as the conservation of Victorian tiles within the apse of Woolwich St George’s Chapel, alongside work carried out for churches, cathedrals, museums, and historic houses.
We take great care when lifting and re-attaching historic tiled surfaces, ensuring that the substrate beneath is properly assessed, stabilised and repaired using compatible conservation materials. Alongside tiled surfaces, we also conserve architectural ceramics and terracotta features, including decorative monuments and moulded details, using sensitive conservation techniques that respect the significance and character of the original fabric.
