Skillington Workshop undertakes the conservation and repair of architectural and decorative metalwork, with specialist experience in the treatment of monumental brasses, memorials, railings, sculpture and metal fixtures within historic buildings and heritage sites. We work with a wide range of metals, including iron, bronze, brass, copper and lead, applying conservation-led approaches that prioritise the retention of original material and the long-term preservation of historic fabric.
Each project begins with careful assessment and investigation to determine the most appropriate conservation strategy. Our work includes the cleaning and stabilisation of corroded surfaces, removal of inappropriate historic repairs, consolidation of weakened elements and the repair or replication of missing components. Where necessary, we can fabricate conservation-grade replacement elements and discreet structural supports that are sympathetic to the original design.
We employ a range of specialist conservation techniques, including mechanical and chemical cleaning, corrosion reduction and protection, microcrystalline wax coatings, patination, and soldering. We also design mountings and fixings for sculpture, memorials and architectural features, ensuring both stability and minimal visual impact.
